That title is a bit of a play on words…. read on to learn more.
You’ve heard of moon rocks…what if I told you that there is a thing called an Earth rock…which was found on the moon.
True. One of the rocks collected on the moon by Apollo 14 astronauts in 1971 contains a fragment of Earth’s ancient crust, dating back more than 4 billion years!
Scientists believe that the rock formed within Earth’s crust, and somehow got jettisoned to the moon by one of the frequent meteor impacts that bombarded our planet (ahem) many, many moons ago.
Collected by astronaut Alan Shepard the basketball size 20-pound rock containing the piece of the earth is one of the largest that the Apollo missions brought back to earth. One might ask (I, for one, am one) how the heck could they possibly know that the minerals in the rock really originated on earth?
I researched it, and it’s quite frankly a razzle-dazzle combination of scientific alchemy that I am not qualified to explain in simple terms. But I can tell you this…they found a mineral in the rock call zircon, which can form only in a geology and environment like earths, and impossible to form on the moon.
